Taylors Lakes Secondary College will be in its sixth year of a Middle Years Enrichment Program. It is aimed to engage students in an environment that will extend their knowledge and challenge their learning. The carefully structured program is designed for students who show potential for learning beyond the classroom.
Students are able to contribute to a range of group based topics that develop their knowledge, skills, confidence and a positive attitude to learning.
Students who are most suited for the Middle Years Enrichment Program are those who:
- work collaboratively and co-operatively.
- thrives on challenging and simulating problem solving.
- set and work towards a goal.
- practices and demonstrates exemplary organisation and time management skills.
- demonstrates a capacity for leadership in their school and community.
- takes risks, share ideas and has the attitude to strive for excellence.
How does the program work?
Each week, students are required to attend 2 Enrichment classes which will be rotational basis, which will avoid missing out on the same class.
In these classes, each year level will have a respective teacher to lead them that has been trained to teach and advance skills which will be required for outside the classroom. To assist them in this process there has been a numerous amount of suggestions, by students to introduce new projects, competitions and topics.
"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever"
-Mahatma Ghandi
There have been a few competitions where students from schools all around Australia have been given the opportunity to display their skills, talents and general ability, to solve a random or community-based problem. Students are encouraged to participate in these competitions to challenge their learning and assist in applying skills associated with lateral thinking as well as giving them an insight of what society holds for them outside the school. The successful students in these events receive state and national acknowledgment as well as rewards for the college.

These intelligent habits are to help students become more pro-active problem solvers both at school and in their everyday lives. 'Thinking about Thinking' and 'Thinking Interdependently' are just two examples of the '16 Habits of Minds' the students are studying this year.
